Y-Strainers are devices for mechanically removing unwanted solids from liquid, gas or steam lines by means of a perforated or wire mesh straining element. They are used in pipelines to protect pumps, meters, control valves, steam traps, regulators and other process equipment.

Y-Strainers are used in a wide variety of liquid straining applications to protect downstream process system components in many industries, including chemical processing, petroleum, power generation and marine. Water handling applications, where Y-Strainers are used to protect equipment that could be damaged or clogged by unwanted sand, gravel or other debris, are very common

If properly installed, Y strainers require very little monitoring. However, it is important to keep track of the pressure to make sure that the equipment does not get too full. This would cause the screen to break and it would need to be replaced. If the screen fails, it could damage the entire system which would quickly become a very costly problem. The filter can be easily accessed which makes for a simple cleaning process overall. Remember to close off the valve connections on either side of the Y strainer before starting to clean and relieve pressure. From there, empty out the unwanted material and debris. Finally, clean the mesh filter and replace it.

Pipeline StrainersTypically applied when the amount of particulate to remove is small because compared to other strainer designs their holding capacity is significantly less. This type of strainer is also commonly used when frequent cleaning of the element isn’t necessary, which implies the particles removed consist of harder, coarse materials that can be drained from the element and that the particulate is not wedged into the element openings which would require manual cleaning. Y strainers have an advantage in that they can be installed both horizontally and vertically with a downwards flow orientation.
